Why we had the Klapkot officially approved as a caravan?

A look behind the bang.

Sometimes innovation starts with one concrete question. In our case, it came from a recreational entrepreneur who wanted to place several Klapkotten in a special location: the dunes.

A place where you literally feel freedom all around you, but where the rules are tight at the same time.
Tiny houses are not allowed there. Caravans are!

And so a whole new challenge arose: Can we have the Klapkot approved as a caravan?
The answer: yes, but it required much more than an adjustment.
We knew the mobility of the Klapkot is close to a caravan. But once we started the official process, we discovered how strict the dimensions are. With a caravan, no part; no latch, no hinge, no detail is allowed to protrude beyond the permitted contour. For us, that meant:
- Review all models
- Adjust the width of the folding pots slightly
- All floor plans revised, models optimised to the millimetre

In short:
Not a minor intervention, but a thorough redevelopment of all our models. And that is exactly what we did. What else needed to be done? Besides the size requirements, the RDW asked for additional modifications appropriate to vehicles in the automotive category, such as:
- Automotive safety glass
- Specific vehicle lighting and signal functions
- Adjustments belonging to registered recreational vehicles

The result: every Klapkot can now, on request, be inspected as a caravan!

After months of customisation, testing, design and optimisation, we are now officially able to:
✔ All Klapkot models to be registered as caravans
✔ Fully RDW-approved
✔ Retaining comfort, appearance and the recognisable Klapkot feeling

This opens doors for entrepreneurs and individuals in places where only caravans are allowed; such as the dunes of Texel, nature reserves, seasonal camping sites and recreational areas with strict zoning rules.
